DO:

We spent a long weekend in Amboseli with some friends, renting 2 cars to drive through the wilderness. The drive from Nairobi is relatively easy, arguably the best serious game park to reach by car from Nairobi (3-4 hours).

Amboseli is heavily populated by elephants, and is arguably one of the best places in the world to see elephants. However, you can also see other game, such as buffalo, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and giraffes – not to mention loads of gazelle and herd animals.  The terrain is a bit drier and more sprawling, so the viewing is easy.

SLEEP:

Ol Donyo Lodge – located on the 275,000 acre Mbirikani Group Ranch, located on the slopes of the Chyulu Hills National Park between the Amboseli and Tsavo West National Parks in southeast Kenya. Technically outside the Amboseli park, but this is one of the best hotels in the area and is eco-tourism at the ultra-high end. Its location is unrivaled with full views of Mount Kilimanjaro and in the path of seasonal Elephant migrations.

Tortilis Camp – another tented camp experience, highly eco-friendly with awesome food.

Go Camping! – near the Amboseli gate is a simple campsite where you can pitch a tent and try your hand at what it was like 100 years ago in the park. Impeccable views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
